JACK formed in early' 95 and were signed to the
Too Pure label following the band's debut
performance in March of that year.
The group, comprising of six of the most beautiful
men in the world, is based around the songwriting
miracles of Scott & Reynolds, JACK's lead guitarist
and vocals respectively. All of JACK are aged in
their mid-twenties and are either Welsh or English,
depending on where they were born.
JACK are: Richard Adderley - Rhythm Guitar;
Patrick Pulzer - Drums and Percussion; Anthony
Reynolds - Voice, Keyboards and Guitar; Matthew
Scott - Electric Guitars; Colin Williams - Bass
Guitar and George Wright - Keyboards, noises and
bleeps.
The last year and a half of JACK's life has seen
them release four absolutely stunning singles. 'Kid
Stardust' (Nov. 95) - their highly acclaimed debut
limited edition 7" (single of the week in the Melody
Maker); 'Wintercomesummer' (Jan. 29th '96)
"...their sparkling ep provides you with a
reason to live... guitars from heaven, voice
from the pretty boy next door." (The
Independent). 'White Jazz' (April 9th '96) and
'Biography of a First Son' (May 20th '96) (also
single of the week in the Melody Maker). After
which JACK then went on to release one of the
truest and most ambitious debut albums of the
decade.
The album entitled 'Pioneer Soundtracks' (June 24th
'96) was recorded at Blackwing Studios in London
with Scott Walker's producer Peter Walsh, and
received outstanding reviews in the Music Press,
Broad Sheets and the Style Magazines. For
example: "...their brutal honesty does nothing
but impress." (NME 8/10), "...bloody
essential? Absolutely." (Melody Maker),
"...deliriously ambitious debut." (The
Guardian), "...a brooding concoction of
shivering violins, poignant lyrics and rich,
shimmering textures." (GQ), "...a debut of
dazzling accomplishment." (Q Magazine), - the
list is almost endless, so it's best to stop here.
Towards the end of '96 JACK were seen several
times around the country as guests on two UK
Suede tours. Anthony, Matthew and JACK's new
violinist Ruth Gottlieb opened the evening on The
Divine Comedy's Spring '97 tour, with an acoustic
set promoting the album 'How To Make Love'.
'How To Make Love' was released on Setanta
(April '97) and was produced by Nick Currie, aka
Momus. It was recorded and mixed in the space of
a week - the point of this exercise was primarily to
enter the studio with finished songs and then
improvise their arrangement. Most vocals and other
performances were recorded in one take: the idea
was not, as is usual, to achieve the best
performance, but to preserve the first. This album
was released under the name JACQUES, one could
say it was JACK's alter ego or his older, slightly
eccentric brother. JACQUES also recorded a single
with Kurk Lake entitled 'Five Finger Discount / All
The Clocks Have Stopped' which was released on
Che Records, Easter '97.
JACK now get ready to go into the studio to record
their second album. Entitled 'The Jazz Age' it will
sound like a more extreme and mature extension of
'Pioneer Soundtracks', the poppier songs are
'poppier', the ballads more intense. A full UK tour
will also be lined up to coincide with the release of
the album.
